1st Annual Comic Expo: “Comics On the Wall” April 1st- 3rd at Artchurch Studio in Historic Whittington Valley

Hot Springs’ first Comic-Con style event, Comics on the Wall, will be held at the Artchurch Studio, 301 Whittington Avenue, beginning Thursday, April 1st, with Educators reception and exhibit from 5-9 p.m., including educator packages with lesson plans, power point video, and curricula while supplies last. Trina Bright, Literacy Coach with Little Rock’s School District, will lead discussion on Comics in the Classroom, followed by Robert O’Nale, who will lead a seminar in Comics: Very Very Brief History of Comics.
During Friday Gallery Walk, April 2, Comics on the Wall features student comic sequence art, Superhero Costume Contest, and Awards Reception from 5-9 p.m. in the Artchurch Studio. Meet Special Guest Mitch Breitweise, an artist, native Arkansan, and illustrator for Marvel Comics: Captain America; the Fantastic Four, the Incredible Hulk, and many others. Mitch’s gritty and realistic take on superheroes is part of a growing neoclassical illustration movement that is breathing new life into old heroes.

Comics on the Wall concludes Saturday, April 3, with a Creating Comics Workshop in the Artchurch studio from 10 a.m. – 12 noon led by Sean Fitzgibbon, who obtained his MFA from the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville and teaches fundamentals of narrative/sequential art. Hands-On comic making workshop for children ages 7 -17 years with Robert O’Neal, and Terri Menefee.

Co-sponsors include Hot Springs High School and Henderson State University.
